Travel Seasons – Zanzibar

Zanzibar's weather varies significantly with altitude and location

The best time to visit Zanzibar depends on many factors, including what you plan to do and where you want to go. The best time for one person might not be the best for another. Rain is most common between March and May. Tropic rains usually fall in the afternoons, accompanied by high temperatures reaching the mid-30s. The dry season lasts from June through October. The weather varies significantly with altitude and location, but it’s usually sunny and warm. Located near the equator, Zanzibar’s climate is very similar to that of Tanzania – albeit a little more humid – and rains are less frequent than in the mainland.

The sea in Zanzibar is always warm enough for swimming and ranges from 25°C in August/ September to 29°C between December and April.

Dry Season – June to October

Day temperatures minimum of 20°C to a maximum of 30°C

Green Season – November to May

Day temperatures average of 30°C

  • November/ December – short rains (“little rainy season”)
  • March to May – long rains (“big rainy season”)

Summary

Different areas in Tanzania have different attractions at different times of the year, so there is no right or wrong time to visit Tanzania but the dry season (from late June to October) is the most popular time for a Tanzania safari. During this dry season, animals congregate near water sources putting predators and prey in close proximity and making for some exciting game viewing. It is also a good time for a Zanzibar Island adventure when the climate is cool and dry. Within this period, August and September have the best water clarity of 25 or more meters, offering incredible snorkelling conditions and whale viewing potential. December to February is also a lovely time to visit Zanzibar and her neighbouring islands, as it’s hot and dry. The wet season arrives in March and lasts until May. When travelling to both countries, June to August is the best time to see the Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti with little chance of rain in Zanzibar.
