There are various ways to travel in Southern and Eastern Africa. To help you decide what type of travel suits you best, we have put together a guideline that will give you insights and ideas on how to best explore our amazing ZULA destinations.
Self-drive
All our ZULA self-drive itineraries include rental cars that meet the tour’s requirements. However, it is possible, at any time, to upgrade the vehicle to a car of your choice. Both South Africa and Namibia offer a variety of rental car categories to accommodate your needs and wishes.
In terms of infrastructure, there are vast differences, depending on which region you are in. In contrast with South Africa, where most roads are tarred, and driving is relatively easy, Namibia presents a different set of challenges. Despite Namibia's mere 5000km of tarred roads, more than 40,000km is gravel. We ensure that all Namibian rental cars are at least 2x4 SUV's.
Self-drive tours provide you with the utmost flexibility. It is up to no one else but you to decide when you would like to leave for the day, which route you would like to take, where you would like to stop or where to take a break.
And while you are on the road, we have your back! There is 24/7 support through our ZULA Emergency Service and through the Rental Car Company in case you need assistance or advice. Our All-Inclusive packages include full coverage insurance, unlimited mileage, a second driver, and a contract fee to ensure your peace of mind. We also book all applicable one-way fees, cross-border papers, etc. that are needed for your trip. In addition to the standard items, GPS, baby/child seats, etc., can be quoted on request.
Our decision to exclude a GPS is simply that we do not want to add unnecessary costs to your booking. Many travelers use other direction services or devices. In every travel document, you will find Google Maps links for all bookings.
Self-drive travel is suitable for couples, families, solo travelers, and groups of family and/or friends. In addition, self-driving is the most cost-effective way to travel in Southern Africa.
All of our self-drive tours can be booked with a private driver/guide or turned around to be travelled in the opposite direction. The surcharge for a driver/guide is on request, and we are happy to quote this service for you.

Guided Tour
The benefit of a guided tour is that you can keep the flexibility of a self-drive tour (departure times, day route, stops and breaks while en-route, etc.) while avoiding the hassle of driving yourself. Your driver/guide will not only conduct the tour, but provide you with detailed information and insider tips, while you can relax and enjoy the trip.
Our ZULA guided tours include vehicles that guarantee an ample amount of space to ensure everyone is comfortable. In the event you want to upgrade to a different car, we can do so according to your preferences.
Each individual day of your guided tour has been planned with you upfront and your guide will be briefed. However, you can always have a chat to your guide in case you want to amend the schedule. He or she will consult you with the best options for the day. Just keep in mind that there may be cancellation fees for certain tours or activities that have been booked in advance. Generally, and to avoid unexpected extra costs while on holiday, we have included most entrance fees in your travel price already.
All of our ZULA tours are guided in English. However, we will be happy to arrange for a guide who speaks your preferred language. For example, many of our ZULA guides also speak German, and we can always set for a person fluent in French or Spanish or any other language. All our guides are registered and fully COVID-19 vaccinated.
The guided tour option is well suited for couples, families, solo travelers, along with family and/or friend groups.

Group Travel
Compared to many other operators, we at ZULA schedule our group tours in small groups of usually up to 12 people only, which allows the use of smaller more private vehicles and a more personal travel experience for you. We provide the best touring vehicles for the respective destination based on the road conditions.
You have the option of an English speaking or a bilingual (for example English/German) speaking driver/guide for your tour. Additional languages are available on request if at least 4 people are booked for the tour.
Our guides will follow a set program including optional activities for you to choose from, but you will also have plenty of time for your own interests.
Like our guided tours, most of the entrance and other fees are covered through your ZULA itinerary, so additional expenditure during your holiday are less likely. Many of the accommodations also include a pre-arranged dinner, so most of your meals are taken care of.
Group Travel is suited for couples, families, solo travelers. There must be at least 4 travelers for the group to make it feasible for everyone. If less than 4 people are booked, we will consider it to be individual travel and are happy to quote a tailor-made itinerary for you.
