We at ZULA offer several accommodation types ranging from Rustic to Premium, each with its own unique touches and quirks. The experience of travelling with us can be described as taking a tailored vacation where each turn is customised to your specific preferences.
Accommodation types are categorised by their location, inclusive meal plans, amenities, facilities and unique features. While a 3-star lodge may include meals and activities, a high-end hotel in Cape Town might only include breakfast. It is not only Premium accommodations that include facilities such as a restaurant, a pool or a spa – there are also standard accommodations that have outdoor pools, beautiful gardens and personalised services from the hosts. It is important to note that the below categories are merely a guideline, and all details are provided in the respective accommodation descriptions.
Many unique and wonderful accommodation establishments are not star-graded, and often the stars do not reflect the service you may experience during your stay. This is why we at ZULA do not use star-grading, however, our information below should help you to understand the ZULA categories better:
Rustic
We define rustic as exposing natural beauty while maintaining ruggedness. Wood, stone, leaves, and other organic elements could used to create this atmosphere, or the structure could be very simply designed to accommodate basic needs. Whether it is knotted wood or rusted metal, the style inherently celebrates character.
- ‘Rustic’ accommodations are usually located in more remote areas of the country.
- Breakfast is generally included in meal plans, but dinner has to be arranged separately.
Standard
Standard accommodation types are typically more casual and offer limited services. It’s often a family-run business, and the owner/manager lives on the property. Standard can also be categorised as self-catering lodges or houses that are comfortable, attractive and meet your practical needs. Of course self-catering options can also fall under any of the higher categories below based on more luxurious facilities.
- ‘Standard’ accommodations are usually comparable to 3-stars.
- Breakfast is generally included in meal plans. Sometimes dinner can be arranged as well.
- Many self-catering options are rated as 3-stars (however, these come without meal plans).
Superior
Superior accommodation offers enhancements to the facilities and amenities. Perhaps the room includes complimentary bottled water, a coffee and tea station, or access to a mini-bar. The addition of a sofa or plush chair in the living space would enhance the look and feel. It’s possible that your room may have a better view, and you may even qualify for included special services.
- ‘Superior’ accommodations are usually comparable to 4-stars.
- Breakfast and dinner are typically included, with lunch being served in some capacities as well.
Deluxe
When choosing ‘deluxe accommodation’, expect to be accommodated in a larger and more luxurious room, often with a great view. The most likely facilities to be found here are a spa, a gym, and a swimming pool. Depending on the type of room – an excellent choice for families travelling together.
- ‘Deluxe’ accommodations are usually comparable to 5-stars.
- Breakfast and dinner are typically included, with lunch being served in some capacities as well.
- Many accommodations as well include drinks and afternoon tea/snacks.
Premium
‘Premium’ accommodation is generally an upscale full-service hotel or lodge that offers luxurious room amenities and facilities, including full-service accommodation, various dining options (including in-room dining), and individualized services including concierge and laundry. Boutique hotels and certain high end Safari Lodges could typically be characterized as premium, if they have an exclusive location, specialised personal services and luxurious & unique facilities and amenities.
- ‘Premium’ accommodations are usually comparable to 5+ – stars.
- They could include Full board inclusive of specified drinks.
- These are mainly game lodges, boutique hotels, high-end properties in remote places or luxury city hotels.
- They could typically include all activities such as game drives and/or walks, day excursions and experiences such as private dinners etc.
