South Africa
It is said that the best time to visit South Africa is between May and September as the northern regions experience a warmer winter allowing for excellent viewing of big game. However, from November through April, the country comes alive with its blooming flora and plethora of animals. This is also the best time to enjoy Cape Town and the Garden Route, with pleasantly warm weather and little rain. The country appeals to a variety of travelers in many ways and accommodates their different travel expectations. All in all, South Africa is highly considered a year-round destination.
Summer (December – February)
The summer months can be hot and humid, although cooling breezes often abound, particularly in coastal areas. The northern regions often experience spectacular afternoon thunderstorms. During this season, the Red Bull King of Air Kitesurfing Competition takes place in Cape Town.

Autumn (March – May)
As the temperatures drop, safari weather becomes ideal, particularly in the northern Kruger area. Coastlines also tend to be drier, which makes them suitable for outdoor activities. The Western Cape’s Bazique Festival and Two Oceans Marathon are held during the Autumn.

- In May (towards winter) – Cape Town up to 19°C, Johannesburg and Pretoria up to 22°C
Winter (June – August)
There is the potential for cooler mornings and evenings, but days are generally pleasant with clear skies. This season hosts excellent weather for safaris, and the first Southern Right Whales start to arrive on the shores, making this the best time for whale watching. KZN’s sardine run phenomenon also occurs during the winter, while the Eastern Cape entertains the J-Bay Open Surf Festival. During winter, the East coasts are on average 6°C warmer than the west coasts.

Spring (September – November)
Temperatures begin to rise, bringing the rainy season to Northern regions. Spring flowers are in bloom in the North of Cape Town, and the annual Wildflower Shows take place. The Namaqualand region also becomes alive with flowers, making it a fantastic time of year to visit the Garden Route and an excellent time for Whale Watching. Water temperatures are rather cold and both Oceans are freshening for swimming at this time.

- Pretoria – day temperatures minimum of 17°C to a maximum of 28°C
Wildlife viewing
The Big 5 are undisputedly South Africa’s most recognizable stars and one of the main reasons visitors choose South Africa as a travel destination. People visit South Africa to experience the thrill of seeing wild animals in their natural environment. There is no doubt that antelope and giraffe are more pleasing to the eye than buffalo, or that the magnificent cheetah is easier to spot than the elusive leopard. Yet, getting the chance to see any of the Big 5 in the wild is still the top safari adventure for most travellers. The months of May to September are ideal for travelling from Johannesburg to Durban, while October to April is best for driving between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town along the Garden Route.

Due to its southern location, South Africa experiences summer while countries further north experience winter, such as Europe and the United States (November to February).
